Shirley Kelly, 84, of Hilton Head Island, SC passed away on Friday, June 28. She was born to the late Med and Mabel Stone of Sharon, WV in 1929. She graduated from East Bank High School in 1946, and then from Marshall University in 1950 with a BS in Chemistry. At Marshall, she met and married the love of her life, the late Robert L. Kelly. Shirley was a gifted chemistry, physics, and math teacher who positively changed the lives of many. In 1988, her accomplishments were nationally recognized and she was presented with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching by the late Ronald Reagan. Strong –minded yet always ready with a joke, she will be missed by her two daughters Claudia Scott of Hilton Head Island, and JoEllen DePorter of Basel, Switzerland, and her two "sons", Bill Scott and Craig DePorter. Her two grandchildren, Isaac (11) and Claire (9) DePorter will carry on with her passion for learning and science. She is survived by the hundreds of teaching and science professionals who she helped to inspire. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 3 at 3 pm at The Island Funeral Home and Crematory. www.theislandfuneralhome.com.
