Ruth Karl nee Grattan - August 12, 1929 - May 14, 2013 Ruth Karl departed this life on 5/14/13, leaving behind her sorrowing family: she was the devoted wife for nearly 60 years of Justin (Judd), cherished mother of Anne Goswami (Bid), Phil Karl (Tricia), Eileen Vickers (Lee) and Mary Harvey (James), and proud grandmother of 11, great-grandmother of one. Born and raised in New York, Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Michael D. and Helen B. Grattan, her identical twin sister Dorothy Milano, and younger sister Helen Ford. Ruth grew up in Pelham, NY, and lived in the Bronx and Mt. Vernon for a short time as a newlywed. Later she and her husband raised their children in the Silver Lake area of Harrison, and Purchase, NY. In 1976 the couple moved to Dallas, TX where they lived for 18 years before retiring to Hilton Head Island, SC. Warm and generous, an optimist by nature, Ruth was a well-loved member of her community, engaged in numerous volunteer activities with her church and the Girl Scouts, among others. She was proud of her status as a 55 year breast cancer survivor, the disease that took her mother and sisters. Ruth was too busy as a young mom with three children under 4 and a newborn to let illness get in her way. In her last years as her medical issues mounted, Ruth adapted as gracefully as possible, sometimes joking that "these golden years are a little tarnished." Still Ruth persevered with grace, kindness and humor until her last day. Her family is grateful the good Lord called her home after one last gin and tonic and a fine meal. Ruth G. Karl, loving and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, good friend to so many, will live in our memory as a wonderful example of a valiant, faithful woman. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society or John Paul II School, P.O. Box 1260, Bluffton, SC 29910 Memorial Mass to be held at Holy Family Church, Hilton Head, SC on Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow at 12:15 at Sea Pines Country Club.
