Maureen Maguire-Souccar, 76, of Haig Point and Nassau, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 9 at Seabrook Healthcare Center. She was born in Montreal, Canada where she lived for many years, and graduated from Villa Maria Academy and Marianopolis College. Maureen distinguished herself as one of the first females to study mathematics at what was then known as Loyola College. She began her successful business career in computer technology and mathematics at the Bank of Montreal where she worked for several years. At one point in her career, she was named as one of Canada's most successful women in business. Later she partnered with two colleagues to form Afloat in France, a European river barge cruising operation which she and her husband directed for several years before selling to Orient Express. It was in Montreal that she met her beloved husband of 41 years, Joseph Souccar. Together Maureen and Joseph traveled the world, welcoming family and friends to spend time with them at their various locations. Maureen was a wonderful wife, step-Mother, sister, aunt, friend to so many. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. Growing up as the only sister among four brothers, Maureen learned to hold her own and served as an additional source of strength for everyone. She was particularly kind to her Mother and Aunts, caring for all of them in their later years. Maureen will be remembered as someone who had a great respect for and kindness to all persons, making new friends wherever she went. She was touched by the loving care and compassion of Joseph's daughters particularly during her illness. She also enjoyed music and loved to sing. Folks at Haig Point will remember her version of La Vie en Rose. She will be deeply missed by friends from all around the globe. In addition to her late husband Joseph, she leaves her step-daughters Deborah Souccar (Doug Young), Audrey Souccar (James Young) and Diane Souccar (Mark Kotscherofski) her brothers Frank Maguire (Josephine), John Maguire (Naomi - deceased), Kevin Maguire (Simone), and Brian Maguire (deceased, Laura -deceased) and several nieces and nephews. Interment will be at 4:15pm on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at the First Union African Baptist Church on School Road, followed by a celebration of life at the Haig Point Clubhouse at 5:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry. (www.hospicecarelc.org) 843.706.2296
