Margaret M. (Peg) Harty of Hilton Head after a long and full life, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2013 to her eternal rest with her Lord and Savior. Mrs. Harty, the daughter of Francis Patrick & Margaret Sullivan O'Connor, was born March 23, 1930 in Bridgeport, CT. She graduated from the Academy of Our Lady of Mercy (Laurelton Hall), Milford, CT & received a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Morristown, NJ. During summers while in college, she was employed by Sikorsky Aircraft & upon graduation, she remained there as a senior spectrographic analyst in the metallurgical laboratory. In June 1955, Peg married her high school sweetheart, Jim Harty upon his return from the Korean Conflict & together they raised four children. Peg, a stay at home Mom, also enjoyed volunteering in the parochial school system where she taught religious education for many years. In 1974, her husband's employment moved the family to Endicott, NY from Wilton, CT. Peg then joined the Literacy Volunteers and the Auxiliary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, NY volunteering in the chemistry lab. She also enjoyed paddle tennis & golf at Binghamton Country Club. Family and friends enjoyed many summer days at their cottage on Quaker Lake in Brackney, PA. In 1986, with their children grown & married, Peg & Jim retired to Hilton Head Island where she continued her service to others by volunteering with the Auxiliary of Hilton Head Medical Center. She was in the first group of volunteers at Volunteers in Medicine in 1993. She was also a member of Saint Francis by the Sea Parish, the Hilton Head Plantation Women's Association & a former member of the Country Club of Hilton Head. Mrs. Harty was predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years and is survived by two sons & daughters-in-law: Shaun & Valerie Harty of Woodstock, GA; Kevin & Kim Melrose Harty of Endicott, NY; two daughters & sons-in-law: Maura Harty & Kenneth Hyszczak of Andover, MA; Megen & John O'Malley of Melrose, MA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Colin & Caitlin Harty; Cameron & Connor Harty; Daniel & Matthew Hyszczak; & Michael O'Malley. Peg is also survived by her sister-in-law & brother-in-law Katherine & Frank Spodnick of Stratford, CT; brother-in-law John Harty of Shelton, CT & several nieces, nephews & cousins. A Mass of Christian of Burial will be held on Saturday October 19, 2013 at 10:30 AM at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, Hilton Head, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Francis School Fund, 45 Beach City Road, Hilton Head, SC 29926.
