John J. Meccariello John Joseph Meccariello of Hilton Head passed away at home on June 24th in the presence of his beloved wife Elsie after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. John was born to Pasquale and Florence in 1925 in Camden, NJ. A WWII veteran, he served in the Pacific theater as a Navy Seabee, and shortly after the war ended, he met and married Ida Elsie Zondler, his partner in life for 63 years. He attended the University of Delaware where he played and later coached football. After graduating John touched many young lives as a high school teacher, football and basketball coach in the state of Delaware. "Coach Mac" was beloved among the many students and players that he impacted so positively throughout his 30 plus years in the school system. After retiring, John and Elsie moved to Hilton Head Island in 1985. An avid golfer, he was a frequent presence on the Sea Pines Plantation golf courses. He is survived by his wife, Elsie, his brother, Louis, his son Thomas (Kate), Spokane, Washington, daughter Cheryl (David), Los Angeles, son Rick (Laurie), Hilton Head Island, and three grandchildren, Zoe, Chelsea, and Bradley. Services will be held at 11 am Friday June 28th at Christ Lutheran Church. A reception will follow the service in the adjacent fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in John's name be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 829 William Hilton Pkwy, Hilton Head Island, SC, 29928, or the Parkinson's Foundation. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. www.theislandfuneralhome.com.
