John Francis Coleman passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2013 at Hilton Head Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the former John and Mary Coleman, was born on February 2, 1927 in Providence, R.I. and grew up in Brockton, MA. After high school he served in the U.S. Navy during W.W.II. He graduated from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service with a degree in Business Administration where he met his wife, Marilyn, and they were married in 1953. After college he worked as a sales representative with G.E. in Charlotte, N.C., then became a distributor with G.E. in Meriden, CT. while living in Meriden he served as a president of Civitan International for several years. In 1969 he took a position as City Planner for South Bend, IN. and also lectured at the University of Notre Dame. He then went on to become president of Lynwood Development Co., a home building and real estate business in Elkhart, IN. He enjoyed sailing at Eagle Lake Yacht Club, and was Commodore for several yeas. He sailed in many regattas and won several races. He retired to Hilton Head Island in 1979 where he enjoyed golfing as a member of Dolphin Head Golf Club and boating at Windmill Harbour Yacht Club. He also volunteered for Habit for Humanity and Hospice Care of the Lowcountry and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a devoted Catholic and parishner of St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church. Mr. Coleman is survived by his wife, Marilyn and five children, Mary Coleman, Karen Coleman, Martha Hoffman, John (Linda) Coleman III, and Stephen Coleman and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Kevin Coleman. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, July 8, 2013 at 10:30a.m., at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church. Inurnment to follow in the Church Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MA, 21741-2014. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
