James W. "Jim" Strayer, 85, local artist and retired advertising executive, passed away August 11, 2013. He was a resident of Sun City Hilton Head. He lived in the Hilton Head Island/Bluffton, SC area for more than 30 years. Jim was born May 19, 1928 in Erie, PA, son of the late Willard and Ruth McCall Strayer. He was preceded in death by his wife and high school sweetheart, Eleanor "Norie" Strayer. They were married 52 years. The Strayers moved to Hilton Head Island in 1979 from Stow, OH. Jim's survivors include his two sons, Jon (Barbara), of Yorba Linda, CA and Randal (Linda) of Sun City Hilton Head, along with five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Jariah, who lives in Whittier, CA with his mother, Shelly, grandson, Christopher who lives in Fresno, CA, and grandchildren Scott (Kristin), Ashley and Kelsey all reside in the Barberton, OH area. Jim leaves behind six siblings. Also, a brother and sister have been deceased for several years. Jim graduated from Fenton High School, Fenton, MI in 1946 prior to serving in the US Navy. After his military service, he earned his BA at the Meinzinger School of Art in Detroit. Following graduation, Jim applied his artistic expertise for many years in the business world, working both as a free-lance artist and as an ad manager/art director with various firms. Upon retirement, he continued to paint at his leisure. Prior to moving to Hilton Head Island, Jim displayed his paintings in numerous art exhibits in Michigan and Ohio also doing commission work. On Hilton Head, he was a regular exhibitor at the Art Gallery for more than twenty-five years. Jim's art is included in many private and commercial art collections from Connecticut to California. Jim was also a long-time devotee of "jazz" music, dating back to his high school days. He was a musician (drummer). He played for many years with various musical groups including his own in Michigan and Ohio, and with a dance band while in the Navy. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at 10:00 AM, at Six Oaks Memorial Park.
