Obituary for Rev. Dr. Milton John Nauss (1920-2013) The Rev. Dr. Milton J. Nauss (born May 11, 1920) passed from this life to the Gates of Heaven on October 19, 2013 in Sarasota, FL. Those present during the last hours of his life were his wife of 67 years, Eleanor, son Robert and his wife Sherrie, grandchildren Jennifer and Kevin, and great grandson Matthew. Rev. Nauss was born in Fargo, ND. He was a graduate of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis (1946). He received an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Concordia Seminary, Springfield (1971), the Distinguished Alumni Award from Concordia College, St. Paul (1987) and The Christus Vivit award from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis (1987). He also received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Concordia University, Portland (2005). He served as pastor of several Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) churches in Buena Park CA, Princeton NJ, Buffalo NY, St. Louis MO, and Hilton Head SC. Rev. Nauss founded and built Chapel of the Cross-Lutheran in St. Louis County, MO. In 1985 at the time of his retirement, Chapel of the Cross was one of the largest congregations in the LCMS with over 3600 souls. Rev. Nauss' sermons were broadcast on KFUO Lutheran radio for 28 years. Shortly after his formal retirement, he founded and built Island Lutheran Church in Hilton Head, SC. In 1973 he served as the co-chairman of the Billy Graham Crusade in St. Louis. In 1976 he served as mediator in an attempt to heal the rift between the synodical representatives of the LCMS and Seminex (Seminary in Exile). An avid golfer for many years, he continued to play in the last year of his life. Other family members unable to be present are: grandchildren Christina Nauss, John Gransbach, Jennifer Achord (Mike), Heather Nauss; sister-in-law Dorothy Kunzel; brothers Allen (Vicki), Ben (Marilyn), the late Harold (Lil), the late Vic (Edythe); and numerous nieces and nephews. A service will be held at Island Lutheran Church, 4400 Main St., Hilton Head, SC at 10 am on Friday, October 25, 2013. A private family service at Six Oaks Cemetery, Sea Pines, Hilton Head will follow.
