Donald M. Grider, 81, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, died Sunday, Sept 8, 2013 after a long illness. Born and raised in Derry Township, Pennsylvania, he graduated in 1950 from M. S. Hershey High School where he was a member of the Hi-Y, Varsity "H" Club, Varsity Baseball team (pitcher and first base) and Varsity Basketball team (captain and leading scorer of the South Penn Conference. He continued his education at Lebanon Valley College where he played varsity basketball as a freshman and was a member of the "Cinderella and the Seven Dwarfs" team which defeated Fordham in the NCAA tournament in 1953 and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. He was then assigned to active duty during the Korean War, eventually being stationed at the U. S. Naval Receiving Station, Washington, D. C. where he was the captain of the base basketball team. Following active duty he continued his education at Lebanon Valley College, captained the basketball team as a senior and received a B.A. Degree in History and English in 1958. He began his career teaching (History and English) and coaching (J.V. basketball) in Lebanon County, Penna. and continued both after moving to New City, New York. After moving to Hilton Head in 1979, he taught History and coached golf at the former May River Academy in Bluffton .He retired after about 35 years in both private and public education as a teacher, administrator and coach of the following sports, basketball, tennis, golf, and cross country on both the high school and college level. He earned his M. A. in Educational Administration (Temple University, 1961) and an M. A. in Special Education, Learning Disabilities (College of New Rochelle, 1974) After moving to Hilton Head Island and teaching at May River Academy, Bluffton, he became associated with the design and sale of both residential and commercial swimming pools, for which he received several awards. At the same time he became involved with the United States Tennis Association and most recently acted as the league coordinator and the state representative for the local USTA Senior and Super Seniors Leagues. He holds memberships in the Lancaster County Penna. Genealogy Society, Lancaster County and Derry Township Historical Societies and the Historical Preservation Society of Lancaster Country. He also has been a member of the Pi Gamma Mu National Social Science Honor Society He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kit, and sons Jeffrey and Hans, and a granddaughter, Abby Basille (Frank). The family will receive friends on Friday, September 13 from 2 to 5 PM at The Island Funeral Home and Crematory.
