DENA WILKINS Dena Wilkins, 62, of Hilton Head Island died Thursday, September 26, 2013 after battling a long illness. She was born and raised in Asheville, NC. Dena Northcutt married her high school sweetheart, Herb Wilkins in Asheville. They moved to Hilton Head Island in 1971 where she worked for Sea Pines in the accounting department before owning Hansel and Gretel Day Care in the early 80s. In 1988 Dena opened Ms. Dena's Day Care in her home where she nurtured many children who still refer to her as their second mother. Dena is survived by her husband Herb; daughters Sondra and husband Glenn Boruty, Christy Wilkins and fiancé Landon Heinze, and son Herb and wife Whitney Wilkins; six grandchildren, Ashleigh, Morgan, Izebela, Gracen, Olivia and Eden; four sisters Ilka McDowell, Sharon Alls, Linda Bowman and Vanessa Allen and her brother Roy Bowditch. She was preceded in death by her mother and father Frances and Roy Bowditch and grandson Trey Wilkins. Friends will be received Monday, September 30 from 6 to 8 pm with a prayer service at 7:30pm at The Island Funeral Home and Crematory, 4 Cardinal Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10am at Holy Family Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be made to Dena Wilkins Memorial Fund at Wells Fargo Bank, Sea Pines Circle branch.
