Catharine "Kit" Cain, 91, of Hilton Head Island, died Sunday, September 8, 2013. She was born to the late Glenn and Sara Catherine (Shorts) Chambers, January 30, 1922, in Wheeling, West Virginia. Kit attended West Liberty College in West Virginia and transferred to the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia on an art scholarship. She married the late Francis William Barba in 1943, and they lived together in Wheeling, West Virginia, before relocating to Hilton Head Island in 1976. In 1986, she married the late Charles R. Cain of Hilton Head Island who died in 1998. During World War II, Kit worked as a draftsman for Baldwin Locomotive in Philadelphia. After moving home to Wheeling, West Virginia, she worked as a commercial artist creating fashion advertising for the exclusive Penthouse department of L.S. Good & Company Department Store in Wheeling, West Virginia. Kit's hobbies included watercolor painting, sewing, and worrying about everyone she loved. She enjoyed hearing about the activities of her large extended family and friends, graciously welcoming and entertaining them all with her hospitality. Kit is preceded in death by a daughter, Catharine Francis, who died in 1952. Kit is survived by her son Michael Barba of Arnold, Maryland; a stepson Charles Cain of Hilton Head Island, and a stepdaughter, Mary Ellen Fruth of Plano, Texas. She also is survived by two grandchildren: Kristen Stolka of Carrboro, North Carolina and David Barba of Annapolis, Maryland; step-grandsons, Chuck Cain of Atlanta, Georgia; Jacob Fruth of Plano, Texas; Christopher Fruth of Dallas, Texas; a great-grandson Marek Stolka; step grandchildren, Ryan & Allison Cain and Jake & Colleen Fruth. Kit is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Saturday, September 14th, from 3 to 5 PM at the Island Funeral Home and Crematory, 4 Cardinal Road, with the service at 5 p.m. Burial will be held in West Alexander, Pennsylvania at a later date.
