Audrey Jean McClain, 90, of Hilton Head Island, died peacefully on Saturday morning, September 14th, at Hilton Head Hospital. Audrey was a local artist, specializing in wildlife and shorebirds and had claimed several awards for her artistry and technique in watercolor and pastels. She attended Withrow High School in Cincinnati then earned a degree from the Cincinnati Art Academy. After college, Audrey sketched elegant models, dressed in high-fashion clothing for newspaper and magazine publications. She taught professional portrait-painting and numerous art courses. When she wasn't painting, she loved playing tennis, golf, swimming, traveling andcatching some sun at Dolphin Head beach.She is survived by sons Scott and Steven, daughter Cheryl Benken, grandchildren Nicole Guy, Kristi Van Den Abeelen, Jill and Jeffrey McClain, Blair Benken, and great grandchildren, Tatum Van Den Abeelen, Madeleine and Katherine Guy . Services will be held Monday, September 23rd at 11:00 AM at the Honey Horn Chapel of First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island. Reception to follow at the same location immediately after the service. Burial at the Beaufort National Cemetery will follow the reception. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution can be made to the Hilton Head Humane Association, (attention: Melissa) PO Box 21790 Hilton Head Island, SC 29925. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
