Anne Katherine Hand, aged 99, died peacefully on September 12, 2013. She was a resident of the Hawthorne Inn (Emeritus) on Hilton Head Island, formerly of Port Orange, Florida and Mineola, New York. Anne was born in New York City, New York, on July 19, 1914, the daughter of William and Anna Burke. Anne was predeceased by her sister, Margaret, her brothers John and William, and the love of her life, Gerard Walter Hand, to whom she was married for 68 years. She is survived by her sons, Deacon Gerard and his wife, Helen; Dennis and his wife, Susan; her daughter, Patricia FitzGerald and her husband, Thomas; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren; and, many nieces and nephews. Anne had an unwavering faith in God and was a life-long member of the Catholic Church; most recently, a communicant of St. Francis by the Sea. Family and friends were Anne's passion and delight. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who took special joy in celebrating the achievements and milestones of her family. Anne enjoyed hosting and preparing meals in her own special way. Along with her husband, Anne was an active member of the Sociable Seniors, affiliated with Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Port Orange, with whom they took many a trip and enjoyed celebrations with friends. Anne adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren - never ignored a birthday, could be found in her younger years skipping rope and playing other games of childhood, prepared food when visiting that added to special memories and always offered encouragement and support. She will be missed by all. Her family extends special thanks to all the staff at Indigo Pines, Hawthorne Inn and Fraser Health Care for their loving care and involvement over the past few years. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 21, at 10:30 am, at St. Francis by the Sea, 45 Beach City Road, Hilton Head Island. Inurnment in the Columbarium will follow the Mass. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
